This old Dam on Shirley Creek at the outlet of Shirley Lake was built by the Booth Lumber company in the early 1920's. Following its construction, Shirley lake was raised a full seven feet and this eliminated the very narrow passage (shown above) during the spring floods. This dam also featured a planked spillway (also shown above) and this sped the logs beyond the dam and over the small falls below. Like most dams of this era, flow was controlled using stop logs which filled a gap between two wooden cribs on each side of the creek. Once the logging in this area was complete, maintenance was transferred to the government. Eventually, in 1974, a new dam was constructed further downstream.
